This is a skilled carpentry and cabinet making work at journeyman level involving the use of a variety of tools in the performance of advanced carpentry and specialized related tasks. The Trades 2 – Carpenter performs the more skilled work involved in such tasks as building construction, office furniture construction, and similar cabinet making duties, and may supervise assistants performing similar work. Other duties include directing and assisting in the construction and repair of a variety of buildings and building additions; performing cabinet-making tasks both in the carpenter shop and in the municipal offices; designing and building a variety of wooden equipment used in public works such as sewer manhole forms, wheelbarrows, and tool boxes; cutting and installing window glass; making estimates of time and materials needed for assigned carpentry tasks; and supervising other carpenters who assist in the most advanced tasks. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include completion of Grade 12 supplemented by the completion of a recognized Trade Certificate of Qualification plus considerable general experience at the journeyman level; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.  Thorough knowledge of standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in carpentry. Considerable knowledge of hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Knowledge of the requirements of the various departments regarding equipment design. Ability to plan and construct a variety of specialized wooden structures; to perform skilled cabinet making tasks; to read and work from blueprints and sketches; to assign and supervise the work of assistants. Skill in the use and care of all tools essential to woodworking. Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia and Certificate of Qualification – Carpenter are required.

Schedule: 80 hours bi-weekly (Monday to Friday 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM)
