Indigenous Legal Relations, Legal Services Branch, Ministry of Attorney General, is comprised of three units: Research Unit, Solicitor Unit and Barrister Unit. The Research Unit provides all government Ministries and agencies with historical and cultural research, which is vital to the conduct of First Nations consultations and treaty negotiations. Research Unit staff also works closely with legal staff to support the delivery of legal advice, and the conduct of litigation.
The Senior Research Officer (SRO) conducts historical and cultural research relating to Aboriginal rights, treaty rights, and other Indigenous legal issues. This work helps to inform Provincial agencies engaged in First Nations consultations and decision-making processes, and also supports the Province’s legal staff in the litigation of Indigenous legal issues.
Qualifications for this role include:
- Minimum Bachelor’s Degree (anthropology or history preferred)
- Five years of progressively responsible experience as a researcher, specifically in the field of Aboriginal rights and title and other Indigenous legal issues and including some experience in a litigation environment
- Demonstrated experience analyzing and evaluating complex issues and managing multiple projects and assignments
