This is specialized clerical work of a technical legal nature involving reading crime report files for investigational content and quality, ensuring that proper investigational procedures have been followed and evidentiary, policy, and legal requirements are met. Along with preparing and maintaining a variety of files, reports, records and correspondence; the Reader – RCMP provides information and assistance to internal and external contacts; liaises with various external contacts related to the work; operates CPIC and PRIME computer terminals; analyses complex and unusual problems and reviews solutions for conformance to established procedures; conducts quality assurance reviews on identified detachment operations; provides guidance and/or alternative investigative avenues under direction of the Informatics NCO. The position works under minimal supervision and is required to exercise independence of judgement and action within defined guidelines and to perform related duties as required.
Qualifications include completion of Grade 12 plus considerable experience in a police environment, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Thorough knowledge of investigational procedures and evidentiary requirements in conducting police investigations; of the Criminal Code of Canada and other applicable federal and provincial statutes and city by-laws; of the rules, regulations, policies and procedures applicable to maintaining RCMP files and records is required, as well as the ability to read and assess reports for clarity and completeness and to ensure all investigational policies and procedures are met; and to ensure completeness, currency and validity of OSR coding and PRIME files and records. The Reader – RCMP has the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts and to effectively communicate orally and in writing. An Enhanced RCMP Security Clearance must be obtained and maintained.
