We have an exciting temporary full time opportunity for approximately six (6) months for a Maintenance Worker – Utilities in the Water Distribution division of our Engineering Operations Department.

Your key responsibilities are: 
Performing skilled manual work involving the construction, maintenance and routine repair of the Water Distribution system. You will operate, maintain, clean, test, repair and adjusts fire hydrants, pumps, pressure valves and related equipment and repair or replace water services or watermains.  In addition, the work involves supervising subordinates assigned to perform  less complex aspects of the work, operating equipment such as a vacuum truck and performing skilled pipelaying and pipefitting tasks; responding to service calls during and after normal hours; Driving a truck to transport tools, equipment, materials and staff to and from job sites.  You maybe required to participate in after hours standby rotation and responding to snow removal during and after normal hours.

A little bit about you:

  • The ideal candidate will have knowledge in the principles, practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in Water Distribution maintenance and in pipelaying and pipefitting work as related to construction and maintenance work;
  • Ability to comprehend and effectively carry out oral and written instructions with minimum supervision and to read and interpret plans, charts, diagrams and layouts;
  • Ability to layout, assist in and supervise the work of subordinates engaged in manual maintenance tasks and to direct the work of equipment operators and truck drivers and to ensure adherence to the appropriate safety standards;
  • Knowledge of the water distribution systems and functions of the Underground Operations Branch related to the work performed;
  • Skill in the use of a variety of power and hand tools and equipment common to underground utility construction and maintenance work;
  • Sufficient physical strength and coordination to permit performance of heavy manual work outdoors in all weather;
  • Your education will include completion of Grade 12 High school graduation plus sound related experience OR an equivalent combination of training and experience supplemented by Certification as an EOCP Water Distribution – Level 1 (in good standing);
  • Completion of Public Works Courses such as Introduction to Public Works and Plan Reading would be considered an asset; 
  • The successful candidate will be required to complete a Police Information Check as a condition of employment. (Note – not required a part of the application process; however, will be required upon consideration for employment);
