The Utilities Group department of the Infrastructure Services division has an opportunity for qualified individuals to apply for the position of Utilities Operator 2. Reporting to the Superintendent – Utilities, this position offers 76.5 hours bi-weekly starting as soon as possible.
This is semi-skilled and skilled mechanical work below journeyman level involving the installation, adjustment, inspection, repair and maintenance of the water distribution, water treatment and wastewater collection systems with emphasis on water supply components. The incumbent maintains water intakes and associated chlorination equipment and conducts water quality testing. The incumbent leads work related to the water main unidirectional flushing, weekly water sampling, and water loss prevention programs. A Utilities Operator II normally works without close supervision and solves the majority of field problems independently, while difficult problems or policy matters are referred to a supervisor. Oral and written assignments received from a supervisor may be accompanied by blueprints or sketches which the Operator II usually interprets without assistance. Work performance is reviewed in terms of adherence to desired standards and the attainment of desired objectives.
Qualified candidates will have completion of the twelfth school grade supplemented by technical courses related to the work plus considerable related experience in water distribution, water treatment and wastewater collection or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Qualified candidates will possess skill in the use and care of tools and equipment used in the repair, installation and maintenance of water distribution, water treatment and wastewater collection system components, and have considerable knowledge of the methods, practices, tools and equipment used in maintaining and operating these systems; sound knowledge of the occupational hazards, proper safety precautions and procedures, and environmental regulations applicable to the work. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to read standard blueprints and sketches; ability to prepare and maintain records, and the ability to train, assign and supervise the work of a helper engaged in routine maintenance tasks. Candidates must be physically able to perform moderate to heavy indoor and outdoor work in all weather conditions. EOCP Water Distribution Level 2, and a BC Class 5 driver’s license with a satisfactory driver’s abstract are requirements of the position. EOCP Water Treatment and EOCP Wastewater Collection certifications would be an asset.
This position works 76.5 hours biweekly at a rate of $36.93 per hour. Employees in the Utilities department shall normally work a schedule consisting of nine days of work in a fourteen day period. Each day of work shall be 8.5 hours exclusive of a one-half (1/2) hour lunch period.
