Reporting to the Foreman Solid Waste and Recycling, Single Family Collection, this is skilled, routine truck driving work involving the operation of all single & tandem axle trucks of gross vehicle weight of 18,000 kgs. or greater (except the container placement truck) in the Solid Waste and Recycling Department. Work in this position supports residential curbside collection in a variety of manners, including: performing scheduled collections; tight lane servicing; missed pickup collections; vehicle maintenance and shuttling.  An incumbent loads, secures, transports and unloads materials under varying traffic and field conditions; swamps on single and tandem axle rear loader trucks with a rear mounted hydraulic semi-automated lift attachment used to lift wheeled carts; manually loads bulky items; travels to and from collection zones, loading, transporting and unloading materials, to the designated transfer station or facility; performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections; cleans, checks and performs light servicing work on the unit; maintains and updates simple records, work reports and in-cab interactive display devices. An incumbent may supervise one or more subordinates engaged in loading and unloading tasks. Works under general supervision of a foreman, exercising considerable independence of action and judgment in performing work while remaining within defined operating limits, methods and procedures.  Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include completion of the twelfth school grade and considerable related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Thorough knowledge of the rules of safe operation and precautions to be taken to avoid accidents in the operation of large vehicles with attached or auxiliary equipment; of the proper methods used in loading securing, transporting, and unloading of materials including container placement. Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public, co-workers and supervisors; to communicate and understand oral and written instructions; to supervise one or more subordinates performing loading or unloading tasks. Skill in the safe and efficient operation of single & tandem axle trucks with mechanized fully automated rear, front and side lift arms or forks; sufficient strength and manual agility to perform manual work. Driver’s License for the

Province of British Columbia, Class 3 with Air Brake Endorsement is required.
