This is skilled, routine truck driving work involving the operation of all single & tandem axle manual, semi-automated and fully automated trucks of gross vehicle weight of 18,000 kgs. or greater (except the container placement truck) in the Solid Waste and Recycling Department. An incumbent loads, secures, transports and unloads materials under varying traffic and field conditions; performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections; cleans, checks and performs light servicing work on the unit; maintains simple records and work reports; may supervise one or more subordinates engaged in loading and unloading materials, tools and equipment. Travels to and from collection zones, loading, transporting and unloading materials, to the designated transfer station or facility. Explains departmental rules, notifies residents (verbally or through placement of stickers on containers) and other staff of contaminants, and handles minor complaints from the public on matters related to solid waste and recycling. Maintains and updates simple records, work reports and in-cab interactive display devices. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include completion of the twelfth school grade and considerable related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Thorough knowledge of the rules of safe operation and precautions to be taken to avoid accidents in the operation of large vehicles with attached or auxiliary equipment; of the proper methods used in loading securing, transporting, and unloading of materials including container placement. Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public, co-workers and supervisors; to communicate and understand oral and written instructions; to supervise one or more subordinates performing loading or unloading tasks. Skill in the safe and efficient operation of single & tandem axle trucks with mechanized fully automated rear, front and side lift arms or forks; sufficient strength and manual agility to perform manual work. Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia, Class 3 with Air Brake Endorsement is required.

This position is posted under the terms of the 2016 Memorandum of Agreement to enable the senior capable applicant to be confirmed in the position, subject to the successful passing of skills tests applicable to the classification and providing that there are no current performance or safety infractions.
