(Casual, On-Call Opportunities)
Position: Casual, on-call Truck Driver I opportunities are available working out of the Bing’s Creek Recycling Centre within the Recycling & Waste Management Division of the Engineering Services Department. Reporting to the Solid Waste Operations Superintendent and supervised by the Recycling Leader V, the Truck Driver I is primarily responsible for automated curbside collection and roll off hauling, contributing to the effective operation of Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD) Solid Waste and Recycling Facilities through the efficient and safe collection and hauling of residential and commercial waste using automated tandem axle collection trucks and other equipment including roll-off trucks as required.
Qualifications: Secondary School graduation or equivalent. A valid Class 3 BC Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement and a First Aid Level I with CPR. Recognized certification as both a Front End Loader and Excavator Operator from an accredited institution would be an asset. Two years of driving experience in a related field using a Class 3 BC Driver’s License or 6 months driving for CVRD using a Class 3 BC Driver’s License. Experience in customer relations and conflict management. Knowledge of: truck/equipment safety and equipment cleaning standards and procedures; general site, transfer station and associated weigh scale operation; recycling and disposal of controlled wastes and local bylaws regarding the handling and disposal of solid waste; and working knowledge of WHMIS regulations and safe work procedures. The successful applicant must possess good judgment, have manual dexterity skills and have the ability to: establish and maintain courteous, tactful, diplomatic working relationships with other employees, contractors and the general public; carry out verbal and written instructions; work with a minimum of supervision; perform a variety of tasks in all types of weather; and enforce provisions of local bylaws.
Salary: This employment opportunity is unionized (USW Local 1-1937) with a probationary wage rate of $30.78 per hour and a regular wage rate of $32.67 per hour (2020 rates).
Hours of Work: As this is a casual, on-call opportunity there are no guaranteed hours of work. Shifts are scheduled based on operational need. The successful candidate must be able to work a flexible variety of hours and shifts and as a condition of employment must be available on short notice for casual, on-call work for a minimum of 2 days per week on weekdays during the hours of operation for Curbside Collection which operates Monday to Friday 7:00 a.m. To 5:00 p.m. Weekday and weekend shifts may be scheduled to operate the roll-off truck.
