The Truck Driver 3 position is part of the Public Works Operations team. This is skilled, routine truck driving work, involving the operation of dump trucks of gross vehicle weight (G.V.W.) of 18,636 kg or more in routine construction and maintenance tasks. Equipment of this type is assigned to all sections within the Public Works Division and operators are required to be flexible with a wide variety of circumstances.  Work includes loading, transporting and unloading materials under varying traffic and field conditions; performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections; cleans, checks and performs light servicing work on the vehicle driven on a daily basis and maintains simple records and work reports. May supervise one or more subordinates engaged in loading or unloading materials, tools and equipment etc. The successful candidate will be required to accept standby and call-out work assignments and operate a vehicle performing snow and ice control work.  Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include completion of Grade 12 and considerable related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience.  Thorough knowledge of the rules of safe operation and precautions to be taken to avoid accidents in the operation of large vehicles with attached or auxiliary equipment. Considerable knowledge of the proper methods used in loading, securing, transporting and unloading of materials, of City street layout and related departmental operations. Ability to communicate and understand oral and written instructions; to maintain and update simple records, reports and enter electronic data; and to supervise one or more subordinates performing loading or unloading tasks. Mechanical aptitude to perform minor servicing tasks on large vehicles. Skill in the operation of large vehicles with attached or auxiliary equipment under difficult driving conditions. Sufficient strength and manual agility to perform manual work. Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia, Class 3 with Air Brake Endorsement is required.

This position is posted under the terms of the 2016 Memorandum of Agreement to enable the senior capable applicant to be confirmed in the position, subject to the successful passing of skills tests applicable to the classification and providing that there are no current performance or safety infractions.
