The Sustainability Coordinator reports to the Operations Manager and coordinates the practical, measurable and achievable sustainability efforts within the UNA neighbourhoods.  This role is responsible for the development and implementation of programs and initiatives which heighten awareness and educate residents about sustainable living practices within the neighbourhoods. The Sustainability Coordinator works with the Operations Manager, to develop and implement sustainability initiatives and programs relating to day-to-day parking operations, facilities, and assets.   


  1. Develop sustainability initiatives and embed sustainable practices into UNA operations following sound environmental and sustainability practices.
  2. Enhance community engagement.
  3. Maintain UNA Community Gardens operation effectiveness and manage garden plot allotment process.
  4. Maintain UNA Parking daily operation and enforcement effectiveness.
  5. Manage the operations of UNA Green Depot.

Program Development (25%)

  1. Develop programs to support community waste reduction, energy and water conservation, sustainable transportation options and other sustainability objectives.
  2. Measure the impact of programs and initiatives within the neighborhoods.
  3. Work with UBC Campus Sustainability Office and UBC operations to develop partnership programs (e.g. UNA compost program, Cool Campus Initiative).
  4. Work with UBC academic programs to develop research projects on sustainability topics that support UNA sustainability goals and priorities (e.g. UBC SEEDS Program).

Community Engagement (25%)

  1. Undertake public and stakeholder consultation to support sustainability initiatives and solicit feedback to ascertain resident needs and priorities.
  2. Develop communication and educational materials on sustainable practices for residents and businesses to support behavior change.
  3. Develop and implement public events (e.g., Earth Day, UNA Yard Sale, E- Waste Drop).
  4. Manage UNA Community Garden Program (works with support of the UNA Community Garden Committee).
  5. Advise and respond to inquiries from residents, staff and other community members on sustainability best practices.

Operations (35%)

  1. Manage the operations of UNA Green Depot.
  2. Participate in the development and implementation of the UNA Parking Management Strategy.  This includes day-to-day administration duties (e.g. liaising with parking enforcement contractor, towing contractor, and responding to parking related inquires and disputes).
  3. Develop training manuals and training material for Parking Operation and provide parking training to front desk staff.
  4. Participate in development and long-term implementation of Operations related sustainability initiatives, including items such as (UNA Landscaping Plan, EV Charging Stations, etc..).

Administration (15%)

  1. Prepare job descriptions, conduct interviews, hire and supervise green depot attendant(s) and volunteers
  2. Source and administer contracts for third party suppliers for recycling and other sustainable/ecological services within the neighborhoods.
  3. Conduct research on available grants and complete applications.

Education requirements:

  • An undergraduate degree in Environmental Science, Geography, Resource Conservation or a related field of study

Experience requirements:

  • Must have a minimum of 3 years of experience in developing community sustainable initiatives
  • Experience working in a university or municipal setting would be an asset

Technical knowledge, skills & abilities requirements:

  • Must have a good understanding of current sustainability and resource conservation best practices.
  • Must be proficient in MS Office tools.
  • Must have an excellent command of English.  The ability to speak in multiple languages (particularly Mandarin) is an asset.
  • Must have excellent written, interpersonal and presentation communications skills.
