Planner Specialist – Urban Planning – City of Kelowna (Kelowna, BC)

The City of Kelowna is seeking an experienced Urban Planner to join us in leading the development of a safe, vibrant and sustainable city.  Reporting to the Urban Planning Manager, your primary responsibility is in managing complex development applications within the City’s urban centres and implementing appropriate zoning regulations, design guidelines, strategies and policies. You will support and coordinate with various departments across the City on urban planning matters that pertain to transportation systems, parks and open space initiatives, streetscape projects and urban centre development.

Utilizing your knowledge in Urban Planning and the development industry, you will work closely within our Development Planning team.  To succeed, you must possess excellent communication, interpersonal and customer relationship skills, as these will be critical as you engage with many stakeholders, developers, architects, consultants, internal staff, external organizations and agencies and the public. A university degree in Urban Planning, Architecture or a related discipline is required, along with eligibility/membership for registration with PIBC. 

Applicants should clearly demonstrate:

  • Presentations skills to Council, committees, and organizations
  • Written skills in preparing formal planning reports and recommendations to Council
  • Organizations skills managing high file volume
  • Understanding of Local Government Act, Official Community Plan and Municipal Bylaws
  • Knowledge of urban planning and design principles and working with policies/guidelines
