Reporting to the Horticulture Foreman, this is manual work of some complexity and variety involving the performance of semi-skilled tasks entailing the exercise of one or more acquired skills. The duties may involve hazardous working conditions, specialized skills, and limited supervisory responsibility. An employee of this class exercises considerable independence of judgement and action particularly in specialized tasks and the work is checked by a supervisor for the attainment of desired objectives. An incumbent will be responsible to care for a variety of flowers, plants and shrubs as well as prepare and plant plotting areas; performs seasonal maintenance of City ornamental properties and grounds; performs routine maintenance on irrigation systems; answers a variety of questions from the public on horticultural matters. Performs other related work as required.
Requirements include up to high school graduation plus considerable knowledge of the practices, methods, tools, materials, and safety precautions used in horticulture work including some supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Considerable knowledge of the planting, cultivating and care of a wide variety of plants, shrubs, trees and flowers and of methods, materials, tools and practices used in garden maintenance operations is required. An incumbent is also required to have considerable knowledge and skill with the safe use of a variety of hand tools and equipment common to horticulture work; will possess knowledge of the functions of the Horticulture Division including established procedures governing the work and the relationship between the Horticulture Division and other divisions within the City of Burnaby; will have the ability to perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled manual horticulture tasks requiring the use of independent judgment related to safety. Some supervisory experience laying out, supervising, and checking the work of several subordinates performing semi-skilled and unskilled tasks in horticulture functions is required. A Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia, Class 5, is required. A recognized Trade Certificate of Qualification – Horticulturalist, Landscape is considered an asset.
