The City of Parksville has an opening for a full-time (3-year term) Director of Special Projects to drive successful outcomes across a broad range of major projects to achieve Council’s goals and strategic vision. The City has a number of exciting and high-profile capital projects planned for this term, including an outdoor music stage, recreational amenities, multi-purpose trails and innovative collaborative governance projects. This position reports to the Chief Administrative Officer and is responsible for assisting with the organization and coordination of corporate strategic and business planning in relation to both the internal and external environment; facilitating cross-organizational corporate special projects as directed by the CAO including managing major capital projects, the City grant application process, Council strategic planning and implementation of key initiatives; offering leadership, direction, information and advice on corporate work planning and issues related to corporate efficiency and effectiveness.

This position will appeal to a professional who understands the complexities of local government and appreciates working in a collaborative, fast paced, team environment. We are seeking an excellent communicator, an adaptive individual who thrives on developing creative solutions to complex problems.

Experience engaging First Nations, liaising with stakeholders and conducting public consultation will be of great value to the successful candidate. Knowledge of permitting processes for senior governments would be an asset.

The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration, Business, Planning/ Geography, Science, Political Science, or a related field (Masters preferred). Preference may be given to individuals who possess supplementary post-secondary education in disciplines such as municipal management and leadership, Local Government Board of Examiners Certification. Professional designation in planning, project management, engineering, environmental planning or a related science discipline would be an asset. The position requires a minimum of seven (7) years of relevant professional experience (public sector policy development as well as objective setting and performance measurement) in a local government setting including five (5) years’ experience in a management role. A valid BC Driver’s License and a good driving record are requirements of the position.
