Director of Corporate Services
The District of North Saanich is seeking applications from motivated professionals to serve in the capacity of Director of Corporate Services. North Saanich is a community approximately 11,000 residents and is
located on the Saanich Peninsula, 25 kilometres north of Victoria on southern Vancouver Island. This unique and picturesque community is surrounded on three sides by 20 kilometres of ocean shoreline, and is comprised of rural/residential areas, a large agricultural base and is home to the Victoria International Airport and the Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal. Reporting directly to the Chief Administrative Officer, this senior position plays a critical role on the District’s management team.
The Director of Corporate Services is responsible for the statutory duties of the Corporate Officer including overseeing the preparation of Council and Committee agendas and minutes, attending all meetings, and preparing all follow-up documentation; managing the District’s human resources/labour relations functions; managing the Records Management and Retention Program; drafting and processing Municipal bylaws, agreements and other legal documents; performing the duties of Freedom of Information/Protection of Privacy Co-ordinator as well as Chief Election Officer for municipal voting opportunities; providing advice to the Council and senior staff on matters requiring interpretation of the Local Government Act, the Community Charter and other relevant legislation; and preparing the Corporate Services’ annual budget. The position is also responsible for directing the District’s corporate functions including human resources and communications.
The ideal candidate will possess an undergraduate degree in a related field such as Public Administration and will have at least six years of progressive relevant managerial experience preferably in a local government setting. Consideration may be given to candidates who have an equivalent combination of experience and education. Leadership and facilitation skills as well as conflict resolution and negotiation skills are an asset. The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, elected officials and the public is essential. The Director of Corporate Services must be an effective communicator in dealing with staff and the public, and in providing advice and assistance to the Chief Administrative Officer and the Council.
