Day Camp Leader
(18 Temporary – up to 3 months)
Parks, Recreation and Facilities Department
An exciting opportunity exists within our Parks Recreation and Facilities Department for Day Camp Leaders. We are looking for creative and enthusiastic individuals with a keen interest in recreation, the outdoors, and a passion for teaching children.
Here are the various day camps that Day Camp Leaders may run:
Jetin’ Day Camps (10-12 yrs) (Out-trip based camp): Have a great summer heading on exciting out trips and adventures. Successful candidates will come with a large variety of games, sports, and transition activities. Responsibility and ability to work independently are key attributes. Skills such as kayaking, rock climbing, swimming, geocaching will be of benefit for this camp.
Victoria Playground Program (6-12 yrs) (Crystal Pool): Victoria Playground Program staff are passionate about engaging children in an outdoor setting. Enjoy working within creative themes like: across the galaxy and land of the lost. Successful candidates will be highly energetic, have an abundant knowledge of camp games and songs and will demonstrate a passion to connect children to the outdoors in creative and fun ways.
Swim n’ Splash Camps(6-9 yrs) (Crystal Pool): Staff need to have a love for the water and have experience with swimming and various water sports for Swim n’ Splash. NLS and WSI certifications are beneficial. Spend summer days helping kids learn swimming skills and have fun in the water. These camps also include a mix of sports, crafts, games, and swimming!
Sports Camps (Crystal Pool and Various Parks) Enjoy spending days teaching children and youth to play a variety of fun and exciting sports. Sports camps include: basketball, baseball, tennis, soccer, badminton, and skateboarding. Successful candidates will be energetic and demonstrate a passion for sports and camp activities.
Beacon Hill Adventurers Camp (6-8 yrs) (Beacon Hill Park) This school-age camp is tons of fun! Staff will spend their days exploring the wonders of Beacon Hill Park, and creating fun games and activities for campers. Enjoy working with themes such as: wonderful wizards, busy bugs, and sensational superheroes. Successful candidates will be highly energetic, have an abundant knowledge of camp games and songs and will demonstrate a passion to connect children to the outdoors in creative and fun ways.
Beacon Hill Nature Explorers (4-6 yrs) (Beacon Hill Park) A nature packed first-time camp experience for children held in beautiful Beacon Hill Park where children can explore and enjoy outdoor creative play in the natural environment. Background in nature based learning, knowledge of natural environments and teaching elementary aged children is an asset.
Teen & Leadership Camps (Crystal Pool and Offsite): Staff must have capacity to lead day, week and/or overnight camps. Topics include: strategy games, initiative tasks, nature appreciation, camping and leadership development. You will need skills such as; outdoor pursuits, team-building, problem-solving, risk management, leadership and public relations. Successful applicants will need a strong ability to interact and connect with teens.
Support 1:1 Attendants: Provide one-on-one support to children in camp setting. Experience providing positive behaviour support, visual aids, and other behaviour management strategies is an asset. Leaders will have a love for working with children and youth, playing games, doing crafts and working within a team. Leaders will also support staff team and help plan and implement group activities and out-trips.
Main tasks include programming, leading and supervising children in camps throughout the summer. Candidates will have a sound knowledge of games, crafts, sports, outdoor recreation, weekly program planning and risk management. Strong leadership abilities along with an understanding of how to effectively work with children is essential.
Current Standard First Aid and CPR C are required. A Class 4 Driver’s Licence is preferred.
Successful applicants will be required to provide criminal record clearance as a condition of employment.
Work schedule: Monday – Friday, up to 40 hours a week

$18.82 per hour, with an additional 15% in lieu of benefits, Pay Grade 103 Job Code # 2011
