This is public relations and communications, technical and administrative work providing measureable and accountable strategic communications and issue management planning, counsel, tactical services crisis communications and media relations for the Burnaby RCMP Detachment. An incumbent of this class is responsible for: developing and updating the Burnaby RCMP Detachment’s annual communications plan; researching, planning and providing analysis design and publishing services; prepares media summaries on current events related to RCMP/justice/law enforcement and other relevant issues; media analysis reports; statistical/usage reports; backgrounds; fact sheets and departmental correspondence; develops multi-media exhibits and other communications products to meet client needs or emerging issues and managing contracted resources as required; provides creative services for the Detachment including writing and editing communication products; monitors daily print and broadcast news media affecting the RCMP and the Burnaby RCMP Detachment in particular. The incumbent will frequently be required to simultaneously address high profile, RCMP reputation sensitive issues that require immediate solutions. Develops and maintains the Burnaby RCMP Detachment website. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include completion of a post-secondary program and/or university degree in communications, journalism or a related discipline, plus considerable related experience OR an equivalent combination of training and experience. Sound knowledge of the City of Burnaby’s governance structure, practices and role in policing services; of the RCMP and the Burnaby RCMP Detachment’s mandate, operations, goals and strategies; of quantitative and qualitative research techniques including: public opinion polling, focus groups, and news content-impact analysis in order to assist Detachment personnel in crisis communications plans, strategic communications plans, and environment scanning. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing to provide advice and recommendations to Detachment personnel on a variety of trends and issues; to design, maintain and enhance the Burnaby RCMP Detachment website. Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia is required as well as the ability to obtain and maintain an RCMP Security Clearance.
