About your next role with The City of Whitehorse…
Currently, The City of Whitehorse has an exciting opportunity for a Building Maintenance Mechanic to join our team on a full-time basis. This role will operate on four 10-hour shifts Monday to Friday or five 8-hour shifts Monday to Friday.

As our new Building Maintenance Mechanic you’ll monitor, operate, and perform mechanical inspections, troubleshooting, installation, servicing, and repairs on a wide variety of mechanical equipment in City facilities on a scheduled and emergency basis which will include heating, ventilating, cooling, plumbing, refrigeration systems, and electrical controls.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintaining, operating, and ensuring efficient and safe operation of a variety of building systems and controls.
  • Updating and maintaining the Computerized Maintenance Management System and providing input into safe work procedures.
  • Maintaining an inventory of supplies by ordering and purchasing replacements in a timely fashion that is in accordance with City procurement processes.
  • Preparing written building mechanical assessment reports and maintaining accurate records.
  • Obtaining cost estimates and making recommendations on the most efficient option.
  • Overseeing capital, operating, maintenance, and emergency projects including supervision of contracts, safety, etc.
  • Maintaining an inventory of tools and ensure they are maintained in an acceptable state of repair and are safe to operate.
  • Acting as the Supervisor, Building Maintenance as assigned.
  • Following, so far as is reasonably practicable, established safety procedures and standards.
  • Other related duties.

In order to qualify for this role, you will need a Journeyman Millwright, Pipefitter, Plumber, or Oil Burner Mechanic certification along with a 5th Class Power Engineer certification (207 hours) and at least 3 years of related experience. You will also be required to maintain your current 5th Class Power Engineering and Gas Fitter certification. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may also be considered.

As our ideal candidate for this role, you will also possess the following experience, knowledge, and certification:

  • Knowledge of National, Territorial, and Municipal Building codes.
  • Standard First Aid with CPR Level C (14 hours).
  • WHMIS & Transportation of Dangerous Goods (17.5 hours).
  • Hazard Assessment & Control (7 hours).
  • Confined Space (14 hours).
  • Fall Arrest (7 hours).
  • Aerial Lift Training (16 hours).
  • High Voltage Safety Course (7 hours).
  • Chlorine Handling (40 hours).
  • Delta/ESC Controls training (40 hours).
  • Johnson Controls (40 hours).
  • Selt Contained Breathing Apparatus (7 hours).
  • The ability to lift heavy items on a daily basis (greater than 23kg).
  • Proven ability to concentrate, pay attention to detail, organize, set priorities, and be a team player.
  • The ability to work with little supervision and function in a multidiscipline environment.
  • A valid class 5 driver’s license.
