Associate Deputy Minister Housing, Construction Standards & Multiculturalism

Salary $190,000 – $230,000 per annum
The responsibilities of the Office of Housing and Construction Standards touch all British Columbians through the universal need for shelter. The work affects a large segment of our economy, including construction, real estate, strata corporations, renovations, rental housing and subsidized housing. The Office is responsible for leading BC’s building regulatory system that protects public health and safety in the built environment including the BC Building Code, BC Fire Code, Safety Standards Act and other provincial building regulations.
The Associate Deputy Minister leads the Office and is responsible for providing British Columbians with access to more affordable, safe and appropriate housing through policy and programs, technical codes and standards, and services for landlords and tenants. This role has overall responsibility for fulfilling the housing service mandate and is responsible for the development, operation, and management of policy and programs that govern housing standards throughout British Columbia.
The Associate Deputy Minister also leads the Multiculturalism Branch which manages the successful completion of projects and initiatives of strategic importance. The Multiculturalism Branch ensures that Government’s legislative obligations under the Multiculturalism Act are fulfilled within three core program elements: Community Engagement, Anti-Racism and Recognition and Proclamations.
The Associate Deputy Minister is responsible for a full review of anti-racism laws in other jurisdictions and launching a stakeholder consultation to inform the introduction of a new Anti-Racism Act. This role also works with the Human Rights Commissioner and other stakeholders to introduce legislation that will help reduce systemic discrimination and pave the way for race-based data collection essential to modernizing sectors like policing, health care and education.
