Four progressive, community-minded leaders have embarked on a strategic journey to bring the Okanagan Valley’s excellence in gastronomy, hospitality, lifestyle and artisanship to the world. To support this vision, the 4 partners of the Naramata Hospitality Limited Partnership have invested, thoughtfully, to create a destination restaurant – with rooms – at the iconic Naramata Inn. The property opened in June 2020 with COVID 19 safety protocols in place for the safety and comfort of guests and staff. Already one of the most talked-about new openings in the country, the restaurant at the Naramata Inn has earned a reputation for outstanding food.
The partners are nurturing a unique workplace culture and building a team of outstanding staff to consistently deliver a branded guest experience that will, hopefully, enable the Restaurant at the Naramata Inn to attain and sustain recognition as one of the top 50 restaurants in Canada. Renowned Executive Chef, Ned Bell, is one of the 4 partners and Executive Chef and General Manager at the Naramata Inn. The Assistant General Manager, Restaurant (AGM-Restaurant) is a newly created role that reports directly to Bell. The AGM – Restaurant role comprises a rare career opportunity for a talented and experienced front-of-house manager to join a world-class team. A recognizable face for the property, with a strong presence, the AGM – Restaurant will play a key role in building relationships with guests, especially the most regular and loyal customers.
Scope of Role
The AGM – Restaurant has a mandate to ensure the guest experience at the Naramata Inn matches the excellence of the food and place. This mandate includes planning for, overseeing and continuously improving all aspects of front-of-house operations, including restaurant and catering services. The AGM – Restaurant is responsible for manifesting a leadership style that algins with the humanistic, player-coach workplace culture of the Naramata Inn and the philosophy of “guests-come-first”. Core values include teamwork, innovation, personal accountability, premium execution, local community connection, and consistency. This role is full-time and involves long hours, with night, weekend and holiday shifts in a destination area with seasonal fluctuations in business activity.
The AGM – Restaurant is responsible for anticipating demand and for sourcing, assessing, hiring, training, coaching, scheduling and supervising a front-of-house team that meets articulated service standards, maximizes capacity utilization and revenue generation and consistently delivers an outstanding guest experience that distinguishes the Naramata Inn in a highly competitive global dining marketplace. The AGM – Restaurant is responsible for identifying and implementing policies, systems and procedures, including point of sales, scheduling and mystery shopper systems, that ensure safety, delivery of service excellence and continuous improvement.
The scope of this role includes responsibility for managing cash transactions, handling customer complaints, providing incentives, discounts and comping items and for assisting the team to handle unexpected situations in appropriate ways. The AGM – Restaurant is responsible for supervising the cleaning and maintenance of restaurant guest areas.
The ideal candidate is a Canadian or Permanent Resident with at least 5 years of supervisory experience in front-of-house operations in acclaimed restaurants that attract customers from around the world. Ideally, the candidate has experience in signature restaurants co-located in hotels placed in in rural, destination tourist areas such as in Whistler, the Okanagan, Tofino, Jasper, Banff, Mont Tremblant, the Napa Valley, the Eastern Townships or Southern Ontario. Preferably, the candidate has completed a post-secondary diploma or degree in business administration, hospitality management or a related discipline.
The candidate must be extremely organized, a good planner, a collaborator and have a solid track record of having successfully implemented systems, policies and procedures that inspire and achieve service excellence. The proven ability to skillfully manage labor costs to optimize both the guest experience and profitability is a key requirement.
Unflappable under pressure, the candidate must have a well-earned reputation as a decisive front-of-house leader who cares about people and purpose. The candidate must have proven expertise in building and leading service teams that have consistently curated extraordinary guest experiences that have secured brand recognition and profitable growth. With abundant common sense, business acumen, sound judgement, and very strong digital and computer skills, the candidate must possess an understanding of, and openness to, the vital roles that branding and marketing play in creating a highly successful business.
Able to handle stress in healthy ways in a demanding role, the candidate must have presence, high integrity, a strong drive for results and the ability to identify and resolve conflicts. With superb logistical, problem-solving, communication, coaching and financial skills, the candidate must be able to expertly plan for and deploy resources in a context of uneven demand. Without doubt, the candidate has a discerning eye for detail and a deep understanding of how physical place and intentionally nuanced service work, inextricably, with excellence from the kitchen to deliver phenomenal dining experiences for guests. The candidate must be passionate about regional gastronomy and have an authentic desire to commit to the strategic vision of the Naramata Inn for years to come. If not already resident in the Okanagan Valley, the candidate must be able and willing to relocate to the area.
