The Policing and Security Branch provides central oversight of policing, law enforcement and the security industry in B.C. The Branch also develops and administers public safety initiatives dedicated to the protection of British Columbians.
The Policing and Security Branch superintends and regulates policing, law enforcement and private security within the province. Policing in British Columbia is provided by the RCMP Provincial Force, 63 RCMP municipal forces, 11 independent municipal forces, and three Designated Policing Units. The Solicitor General, as the chief law enforcement officer for the Province, has a statutory mandate under the Police Act to ensure that adequate and effective levels of policing and law enforcement are maintained throughout the province.
The Assistant Deputy Minister (ADM), Police Services has the overall responsibility to fulfill the service mandate of the branch and is the executive responsible for all aspects of the development, operation, and enforcement of government policy and programs that govern policing, law enforcement and security throughout British Columbia. The ADM provides leadership within the Ministry for the development of legislation and policy initiatives relating to policing and security. This position must establish and maintain links through a variety of provincial, federal and municipal and security industry representatives and community groups to recommend pro-active responses to policing and security services issues throughout B.C.
We are looking for an excellent communicator with experience managing high profile and sensitive issues, successful stakeholder engagement history, and strong relationship building and interpersonal skills. You must be accessible and flexible; an outstanding manager of people and resources; creative and innovative; and viewed and respected as a progressive, trusted leader of absolute integrity. Senior public sector leadership experience in a large policy and legislative focused environment is required, preferably within a Canadian jurisdiction. This role also requires significant experience in and understanding of the structures, processes and practices of government; a well-developed understanding of Cabinet, Treasury Board and ministerial briefing is essential. Preference may be given to candidates with experience in a senior policing, regulatory, compliance or enforcement role, with an understanding of investigative processes.
