This is supervisory technical work involving responsibility for planning, supervising and reviewing the work of subordinate sub-foremen and crews engaged in a variety of arboricultural tasks in Municipal parks, grounds and on boulevards. An incumbent exercises considerable independence of judgement and action in performing assigned duties, referring the more complex matters and those involving significant budgetary expenditures to a supervisor who reviews work performance on the basis of effective supervisory and operational services rendered in the achievement of desired objectives. Inspects, during progress and upon completion, the work of a subordinate crew(s) and private contractors to ensure quality of workmanship and conformance with plans, specifications and/or standards; rejects unsatisfactory workmanship and defective or unacceptable materials. Provides advice and assistance to staff in other departments; arranges for arboricultural services in response to departmental and external requests; determines priorities within general priorities established by a supervisor; ensures adherence to project schedules; maintains records related to the work; prepares requisitions for material, tools and equipment and allocates same. Establishes work norms and devises safe work methods; ensures the safety of work crews and the public by advising and enforcing observance of accident prevention methods and precautions. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include completion of grade 12 supplemented by courses related to the work plus considerable related experience in a supervisory capacity or equivalent combination of training and experience. Considerable knowledge of the arboricultural methods, practices, materials and equipment used in the work; of the hazards and safety precautions applicable to the work. Ability to read blueprints, sketches, plans and diagrams; to prepare budget estimates, to monitor and control expenditures and to prepare and maintain a variety of records related to the work; to work with minimal supervision; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts. Skill in the use and care of a variety of tools and equipment used in the work. Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia, Certification as an Arborist with the International Society of Arboriculture and Tree Risk Assessment Certification are required.
