This aquatic leadership work assists in directing the provision of aquatic instructional and recreational programs in a multi-purpose aquatic facility on an assigned shift. An incumbent of this class supervises, checks and participates in the work of a moderate sized group of full-time and part-time subordinates engaged in instructional, lifeguarding, maintenance, custodial and clerical/cashiering tasks. Participates in the planning, organization and promotion of aquatic programs; evaluates and recommends changes to a variety of instructional, competitive and recreational aquatic programs for all ages. In addition, the incumbent participates in program development and promotion, and while independence of judgement and action is exercised with respect to matters of a routine nature, difficult or unusual problems are referred to the Centre Supervisor or Aquatic Programmer who reviews work performance on the basis of effectiveness of services rendered and conformance with established policies and procedures. Prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports related to the work. Performs related work as required.
Qualifications include completion of grade 12, supplemented by courses in lifeguarding, aquatics instruction and pool operation and maintenance; plus sound related experience including some supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Sound knowledge of the theory and practice of lifeguarding cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and first aid. Working knowledge of pool chemistry, water filtration, chlorination, heating and related pool equipment and operating procedures. Ability to deal effectively and courteously with staff, public and user groups. Water Safety Instructor Certificate, Lifesaving Society Instructor Certificate, National Lifeguard Service Award, and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation Certificate, Level C (CPR-Level C) required. B.C.R.P.A. Basic Fitness Leader – Aquatics is an asset.
