Position Overview
Please note that this is a temporary, part-time position until approximately August 31, 2019, or return of incumbent.
 
Performs skilled fitness work of a relatively complex nature under the limited supervision of the Recreation, Health & Wellness Supervisor. The work involves planning, implementing, directing, promoting, and coordinating health and fitness programs of a specialized nature for all ages, maximizing the use of City recreation facilities. The incumbent is responsible for hiring, directing, and evaluating contract instructors who teach programs or lead activities. The work also involves the requisition of supplies and equipment; maintaining records; preparing reports, brochures, and ads; and acting in a consultative capacity with public agencies, health agencies, and community groups. The work involves mostly inside work, occasional pressures of volumes of work, average exertion, and the possibility of incurring minor injuries. He/she must use constant care and take considerable precautions to ensure the safety of the public and must exercise courtesy and tact in relation to the general public and co workers. Details of work are not checked, and errors could cause loss of service to clients.

Responsibilities

  1. Organizes, develops, monitors, and supervises health and fitness programs of a specialized nature in a collaborative manner with other team members of the Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services Department, the Interior Health Authority, and other related health agencies with some direction from the Recreation, Health & Wellness Supervisor.
  2. Identifies community needs that relate to health and fitness programming, particularly specialized populations and creates opportunities to fill gaps within the community.
  3. Recruits, hires, trains, and evaluates program instructors and volunteers, including the preparation of term certain and business contracts for new contractors.
  4. Maintains records of staff and contractor certifications and tracks recertification and professional development requirements.
  5. Liaises with community and health agencies (including the Interior Health Authority) and special interest/needs groups and the general public regarding community health and fitness needs and programs.
  6. Ensures Recreation Assistants have logistical information for all bookings required to support city-wide fitness programs and initiatives.
  7. Develops, coordinates, and conducts educational clinics and workshops focused on health, wellness, and chronic disease and; identifies and analyzes research on health and fitness programming and specialized populations and monitors trends and issues that influence program development.
  8. Prepares, organizes, and distributes brochures and markets health and fitness programs and events using various modes of media, including print, radio, and television.
  9. Prepares reports based on the evaluation of health and fitness programs, events, and initiatives as requested by management.
  10. Supports the departmental organizational and operational plan.
  11. Performs related duties as required.

Requirements
REQUIRED SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND KNOWLEDGE

  1. Considerable knowledge of the development, organization, and supervision of health and fitness programs, particularly as they relate to chronic disease.  
  2. Considerable knowledge of administrative processes and report writing.
  3. Considerable knowledge of computer software programs.
  4. Ability to clearly and confidently present information in diverse environments, when required.
  5. Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy when dealing with the general public or when representing the department/City, as evidenced by strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  6. Ability to motivate, direct, and assist the activities of staff and contractual workers.
  7. Ability to self-motivate and to function with a minimum of direction and supervision.
  8. Ability to identify community needs that relate to fitness programming, particularly specialized populations, and create opportunities to fill gaps within the community,

 
PREFERRED TRAINING, EXPERIENCE, MEMBERSHIPS, ETC.

  1. Knowledge of CLASS software.
  2. Demonstrated, recent volunteer work within the community.
  3. Current member of the Canadian Association of Cardiac Rehabilitation.

 
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, LICENCE, CERTIFICATES, ETC.

  1. Completion of senior secondary school or its equivalent.
  2. Completion of a post secondary degree in Physical Education, Human Kinetics, Kinesiology, or Exercise Science
  3. Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) Certified Exercise Physiologist (CSEP-CEP) or must obtain the designation within six months of being awarded the position
  4. Minimum one year current experience (within the past three years) working in programs with chronic disease and cardiac rehabilitation.  
  5. Current CPR Level C and AED certification.
