This intermediate officer position is responsible for providing outreach services to members in crisis.  Works one-on-one with clients, via telephone, email or face to face, to provide emergency/crisis intervention counselling and to determine eligibility for emergency assistance.  Provides support to members while they navigate through various federal/provincial systems.  Maintains/prioritizes caseload and supports given.  The position supports the MSS (Member Support Services) team with cases of Emergency Assistance and follows up/authorizes as per established process.  Conducts research/provides recommendations to Management and implements approved decisions, including advising members when requests are denied.  Also assists with special assignments.  Operates at a high level of membership interaction, the incumbent must be able to respond with courtesy, tact and diplomacy.  
 
Typical Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Provide outreach services to vulnerable member or members in crisis. 
  • Builds outreach/emergency services relationships and represents department. 
  • Responsible for emergency/crisis calls and intakes.
  • Provides crisis intervention counselling. 
  • Follows up with members, MSS team, other departments, external service providers/partners, etc. 
  • Performs research to update/maintain resources, partnership, etc. 
  • Assists in the development of Emergency Services policy. 
  • Provides after hours on-call services as required. 
  • Assists Member Support Services team with events/special assignments. 
  • Acts as backup to Management as required/per established process.
  • Adheres to workplace health & safety policies, safe work practices and procedures.  
  • Participates as a member of the Member Emergency Services and Member Support Services teams.

 
Education, Level of Experience & Hiring Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Crisis Counselling, Community Support Worker, Family Support Worker or related/relevant field from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • Minimum of 1 – 3 years (with Bachelor) OR  5 – 7 years (with Diploma) of directly-related experience in the majority of duties listed in job description including counselling, crisis management, performing outreach services, providing emergency/support services, caseload management, etc.
  • As career progresses, incumbent will be required to successfully complete job-required, short-term upgrading, training and courses relating to employee counselling, mediation, conflict resolution and case management, etc.
  • Experience as an intermediate level user of MS Office, the internet, etc. 
  • Working experience with a large scale computerized database system. Experience with JD Edwards is an asset.
  • Previous experience working in a First Nations Community (particularly Squamish) is preferred.
  • Must have a valid BC Driver’s License Class 4 or 5, Class 7N may be considered.
  • Must have a reliable vehicle and current auto insurance.
  • Must be able to work ‘on-call’ after regular work hours as per schedule / determined by Management. 
  • Must successfully complete Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Check as per Squamish Nation Policy.
  • May be willing to consider enrollment/diploma program in progress with completion required within specified timeframe, plus a minimum of 5 years directly-related/relevant work experience  OR  Grade 12 plus 8-12 years directly-related/relevant experience may be considered for above education and experience.
