Electrical Technician I

Main Purpose & Function
To perform detailed technical work in designing, estimating, writing specifications, preparing tenders and tender evaluations, project scheduling and managing, material coordination, and inspection related to the City’s Traffic Management and Street Lighting Systems; including but not limited to traffic signals, traffic signal controllers, electronic equipment, street lighting, communications systems and other electrical distribution projects as assigned.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
To work in close coordination and liaison with other City divisions, utility companies, project consultants, developers and contractors, electrical and electronic suppliers and manufacturers, various Business Improvement Associations and the general public. To prepare special studies and reports on budgets and budget related issues, operating procedures, products and equipment technology available in the market. Perform night inspections and attend public meetings as required. This position will also involve supervising technical staff related to assigned projects.
Completion of grade twelve; supplemented by post secondary education in a field related to electrical and/or electronic technology. Eligibility for registration in the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC is desirable. Experience working in traffic signal and street lighting design will be considered an asset. Knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), the Canadian Standard Association (CSA) rules and regulations, the International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) specifications and the Uniform Traffic Control Device (UTCD) standards, and the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) of North America standards and lighting simulation (AGI32 or equivalent simulation software). Good verbal and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills along with a proven ability to be a team player.
Demonstrated ability to manage projects and to be able to deal with changing and competing deadlines within a multiple task environment. Demonstrated ability in dealing with all levels of the organization effectively. Supervisory experience is an asset. Must have basic drafting skills and an ability to read and interpret engineering drawings. Knowledge of AutoCAD, Access, Word, Excel and Project will be considered an asset.
Local area travel is a requirement and working hours may vary as per operational requirements. A current and valid BC driver’s license is a requirement of this position. Transportation arrangements must meet operational requirements of the Department.
